Happy Anniversary

Dear Gayathri and Athimbere
Wishing you many Happy Returns on the 31st of August.
Slowly me memories are kindled and i remember gayathri's wedding and the date now rings a bell.I used to keep track of all these dates for many years but slowly lost touch with many of my cousins.
I am sure Kailash tip willbe the highlight of the celebrations.
I had a very nice evening with gayathri during my recent trip to Chennai and enjoyed the company.
Looking forward to hearing your kailsh experience.

Racist!!!

Racist, yes. As perimma says, to some extent definitely. Forget the colour of the people, it is not that. If it had been some Indian farmer dressed in a dhoti, with a "Manja Pai", would we have shown them around like this??? It does trigger the thought.

But then, I am not sure if it is the colour of theskin. When I went to US in 2001, and was traveling by bus to New Jersey to visti Kumar anna and family, a black lady was seated beside me. I was terrified, not because she was black, but because of the various stories I had heard about the kind of crime they get involved in. Whereas, while we were in SIngapore, Mohan and I came across a group of black men, but that did not trigger any such feeling in us. I think it also depends on what kind of surroundings we are in that influences our thoughts and actions. In fact, when I had gone to the US this time, I was very hesitant to talk to any white person in the office. Only because, I was scared that they are racists and they consider us Indians a few grades lower to them.

Foreigners

Sundaresan's question is also what occured to me! We are all racists to some extent!
Vimala

Foreigners

Akila,
This group of foreigners was from Holland. The first thing they asked us was "Do you speak English?" They wanted to know what was going on. Between Ramu chittappa & me, we explained the basics about a Hindu wedding. They guessed the groom's age to be 25 & they were right! They also asked how the match was made, in this case it was not made by elders, but by the bride & groom themselves, & then came the consent of the parents! They had come to see some 'Guru Mataji' in Goa city. They requested to be allowed to meet the Couple & that is when you took over. They got a free dinner in the bargain!!
S says: As everyone attending the wedding will be dressed in their finery, to distinguish the main hero & heroine of the day, they wear a garland, may be?
S also wonders: If the group of foreigners had been other than white, would we have showed them the same courtesy?

Jangamma

Why is the mention of Jangamma & her photo still capable of moving me to tears? Must be the unconditional love that she showered on us. That warmth, that attention, making each one feel important & wanted. J chittappa, thank you so much for bringing her image alive on our blog. I think that arali maalai was put on on Sumangali Prarthanai day this year - & am happy that I made that maalai for her!
We (S & I) went to all his elder brothers' & sisters' houses today after Avani Avittam to offer our namaskaram & also take leave for our Yatra tomorrow. Now I offer my pranams to all elders of PSC family as we embark on the trip. And more thanks to J chittappa for making us remember Amma too.

Janga Manni's birthday

How many of us ever bothered to find out what mother (Janga Manni)'s birthday was? Recently I asked Ramakrishnan if he knew the date and he rang up today to say it was 12 August 1909 (Month of Adi, Tiruvadirai star). Though we missed out on the date, the month (August) is still current. Let us remember Manni with gratitude for her unfailing love, simplicity and good nature.

An account of non-Indians at my cousin's reception

As appa already mentioned, we had my cousin's wedding reception yesterday(26th August) evening at New Woodlands. As it was held in the lawn, the area was quite open to everybody passing by. There was a group of non-Indians (foreigners, as we call them) who were extremely curious to know what was going on. They were watching from near the entrance for quite a long time, everything that was going there. Then I found them talking to Gayathri akka and Gayathri akka explained to them our wedding rituals and what was actually going on there. They then requested to meet the couple, and I escorted them to the stage. We then proceeded to the dining hall and they enjoyed Masala dosa and sambar, Gulab Jamun etc.

While we were sitting in the dining hall, they noticed the mehendi in my hands and wanted to know what it was. While I was explaining the significance of the mehendi, one of them clicked a picture of my fading mehendi. Then they asked about the various kinds of sarees we have, how they are rated etc.

Though I was able to answer most of their questions, one of them bowled me. The question was, why are the couple wearing garlands? I know that it is not really necessary for the reception, but I am sure that it has some significance during the wedding itself. Can anybody please tell me what that is?

Wishes

Many many happy returns to Uma manni/Hari anna, Prasad anna/Charu Manni, Gayathri akka/athimber, Rama akka.

Love
Akila, Mohan, Vaishnavi

A pleasant surprise

Dear Jayaram Mama and Ramu Mama,
Many thanks for your birthday greetings. It was a pleasant surprise. Honestly, I did not expect my photograph. :)
The Sadabhishekam photos were excellent and it was quite thoughtful. More than that, it was a very good feeling to see all relatives after a long time; heartening to see the rich culture and tradition which the PSC family upholds. The trend should continue.
With warm regards,
Anand.

PSC

On August 09, I took a slow walk from Raju anna`s house, via K.Nagar, Luz Avenue, Justice Sundaram Iyer Road, to Rama Rao Road.

I stood in front of our K.Nagar house, Sri Bagh and Luz Corner for quite some time, enjoying the old memories and ultimately ending with some sadness. Whenever I pass through that place , I used to narrate my K.Nagar life to the person with me, even if it is an auto driver.

If this is the feeling I get , what thoughts and feelings PSC would have had, day in and day out, while passing Sri Bagh!! How was it possible for him to keep all his thoughts and feelings within himself, not showing any sign in the face!

What a great person he was!

Ramu

PSC

Ramakrishnan was sharing his following thoughts with me at Raju anna,s sadhabhishegam.

It was PSC`s tenure in Vellore. ( I think I also must have been there as a child).
PSC after his bath and pooja, used to give dictation in the mornings, have lunch, go to court, and return in the evening. Then he used to go to one club for his tennis, come back and go to another club for his billiards. After returning and his japam, he used to sit & chat with everyone for sometime. Then he used to do his reading , to be ready for his dictation next morning.
In spite of this busy schedule, he never showed his feelings outside and was always with a pleasant face.

What a great person he was !

Sadabhishekam

It was great fun at the Sadabhishekam yesterday. Perippa, the photo is very clear and looks like a professional portrait. I was so engrossed meeting everybody and catching up that at one point I forgot why we were all gathered there. Then suddenly heard the vaadhyaars chanting the mantram and was reminded of that. :)

We all had some celebrity darshan as well thanks to Ravi anna and Arvind anna. When ManiRatnam walked in, I was entertaining Vaishnavi outside the hall with Niranjan. Thanks to Niranjan, ManiRatnam halted out for a while and said "dey"!!! Niranjan then screamed "Mani uncle" and held his hand tight and screamed again for everybody's benefit "This is ManiRatnam"!!! I was staring (mouth dropped open going unsaid). As Niranjan was standing with us and talking to Vaishnavi, ManiRatnam then dropped a smile to us too!!! Blessed were our souls, haha!!

Perippa, any pictures of our celebrities other than some more pictures of the family?

The satabhishekam of Raju and Padma Manni was celebrated on 8 August at Raga Sudha Hall, Chennai. It was a very happy occasion, well attended. Our namaskarams to the sahasrachandradarsis.

OB

I really am not sure what "OB" means, but I have heard enough of it!!! :) Amma and appa used to scold me "OB adikkaama ukkandhu padi"!!! So, I associate it to something like dodging or time pass.
Any inputs anybody??

PSC

It was 1999 and I was in Madurai with Pioneer Wincon Ltd. We were getting a leading consultant at Madurai for our ISO work and our Manager _Quality was organising it. He recieved the consultant the previous night and has had a discussion at his hotel. He had mentioned that one P.C.Ramachandran will co=ordinate with the consultant. On hearing my name the consultant had been discussing about PSC family, with all praises.

Next morning the Manager-QA told me that the consultant was more eager to meet me than ISO and he said the name of consultant was Vijayaraghavan, I could never guess who he was.

The consultant came to factory and straight to my room and it was Sankar, brother of Rukku,s friends, Sushila and Savithri. He spent most of the time talking and praising PSC family . And finally a little time on ISO.

THANKS

I have logged on after nearly a week. After returning from KVP, my laptop conked off.
First, thanks J chittappa, for uploading the slokams. And Ramu chitappa, thanks thanks for all the praise. I feel very very small when you say all that. I can only remember that after listening to Jangamma's singing that Srikanth had put up on the psc mail - I felt that my singing was so similar to hers!
It was great seeing a large part of the clan get together at NJ. I was wondering about two of the kids, then almost at the end, saw Srikanth, so guessed that it must be his kids, & the lady, his wife!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES TO KN ATHIMBER & CHANDRU MAMA!

Akila, what is OB?

Nice to see Akila back in the blog. Please keep blogging.

What is OB time? Is it 'onnum pannada' or 'ozhinja podu'?

Catching Up

I am catching up after almost a week now. Did not get enough "OB" time :)

Gayathri akka's slokams were excellent. I always liked Bombay Jayashree for her divine voice. Gayathri voice is absolutely much more than that. And the simple background provided by Rajiv enhanced the divinity!!!! Seems Vaishnavi says "thatha, Gayathri Perimma slokam podu".

The photos taken at Kumar anna's gathering were very good. I am seeing so many people after so long. Except the kids (who have all grown so fast), the elders are all the same, after all the years.

PSC

I was attending a week long course on gaining peace and good health through breathing excercises. Master was explaining that our body has seven layers, the last of which is Anandham. I asked a question ~ If a person was not able to fullfil all his duties , may be childrens, education, or marriage or security for wife, how he can gain & practice Anandham ? The Master explained that with the resources given by God at each situation , we should do our best to the best of our ability, get satisfaction and should not look back. Immeadiately my mind went to PSC. How true are these words for PSC. He did his best to all of us, right from getting an icecream during childhood upto marriage, with smile and has never shown his feelings to anyone. Ramu

SLOKHAMS BY GAYATHRI

I know that Gayathri has a good gnanam right from childhood, and I have been seeing her development in music ( apart from many other meaningful activities). And I was also sure that she is the best in that art in our family.

But after listening many times her slokhams, I have to change my opinion. SHE IS THE VERY BEST AND COMPARABLE TO MANY LEADING VOCALISTS. What a blessing she has from God and she has not neglected that blessing.

Why she has not taken it as a profession, atleast for the sake of art!!

The accompanyment by Rajiv has added colour and when we play it, the whole house is filled with peace. I am unable to find suitable words to express my praise. Sarada too is with me in this. She keeps saying that it is better than Bombay Jayasree.

Ramu

Chandru's birthday

Ramu has raised a query about Chandru's birthday. As I mentioned in the earlier post, Chandru ENTERS his 80th year on Sept 25. For Sathabhishekam, one has to be 80+ [having seen 1000 moons].
