The Hindu

Regarding Aishwarya's post on the new campaign by The Hindu, it is a response to the print and TV campaign by the Times of India. This took a dig at The Hindu (indirectly, parts of a page of The Hindu were shown) saying the Times was not a paper which put you to sleep! It showed people in queues, etc, going to sleep with a paper in hand. So the catch line in The Hindu ads (also appearing in print) is
"Stay ahead of THE TIMES".

Our blog

To add to what Akila has said.  It was she who told me some time ago that Liffy Thomas of The Hindu would contact me to talk about the blog.  Liffy did and I told her also about the blog run by Vimala's brother Kalyan.  Liffy, accompanied by a photographer, visited Kalyan and the result is the artile in the Hindu, (Chennai edition only).  Aiswharya, whose colleague Liffy is, will be happy to know that Kalayan found Liffy very courteous and likeable.

Our blog

The story by Liffy Thomas on families staying connected was published in metroplus yesterday. Appa said that the photo that was published was that of Vimala perimma's brother.
Also perippa and our blog is mentioned in the story . I did try to get a link to the article but could not manage it.
Edited to add the link to the article, which I finally managed to find

The Hindu : New Articles News : Stay ahead with “The Hindu”

This is apparently a new ad by The Hindu. I'm not sure if this has been aired already. But since I came across them just now and I am all excited to see The H finally marketing itself in a workable way, I'm sharing this. Take a look :)

Greetings.

Happy Wedding Anniversary to Vidya/Ramesh and Happy Birthday to Mani.

Education

I fully agree with Aishwarya's posting. Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan has started a branch in Vadavalli, Coimbatore. My friend's son and family have now come back from USA and tried to put their child in that school in play-school. For this there is an interview of the child (parents are not allowed) and a donation of Rs.50,000.

Greetings

Belated greetings to Ramakrishnan and Saradam on their wedding anniversary, 20 January.  I can't imagine how I missed it.

Today, 22 January, is also the wedding anniversary of Vidya and Ramesh and the birthday of Mani.  Greetings to them.

School admissions

Aishwarya's post should bring familiar memories to most parents.  Education in India is getting to be more and more of a nightmare every day.  Unfortunately, our governments have no time or money to attend to basics like education, health etc. as their first priority is to keep the kursi.

Bharat mahaan hai! India shining!!

The answer

Perippa, right. Both of them are tumblers :)

A very very happy birthday to Varshaya. Have a great day and many happy returns

Greetings

Birthday greetings to Varshaya (20 January).  Many happy returns!

School admissions

Hope all's well with all of you.
My colleague Liffy Thomas sent me the link to her story on coaching for LKG entrance! It was sure a shocker to see something like that even existing and worst still, its demand growing. I'm already wondering if I could start requesting recommendation letters from The Hindu bigwigs (Bad timing. N.Ram has quit.).
How much more ridiculous can it get? Honestly, I would want Amrritha to get through one of these top schools for sure. But an entrance? And a coaching class for it? I'm seriously thinking of putting her in a modest Montessori school that does not introduce the concept of homework till secondary classes.
And the article says kids know which animal has the longest neck. I can never even pronounce giraffe till my 8th grade (I'm still not sure if I'm pronouncing it right.).
And a child that asked for a dustbin to throw the wrapper when the interviewers gave her a chocolate got selected! The same interviewers wouldn't mind one bit throwing a maligai list down the road on their way back home. Isn't it too much to expect something out of a kid that is hardly out of its toddler-hood?
I was reminded of an exchange between Prakash Raj and a school principal in Abiyum Naanum.
Princi: Unga ponnuku neechal theriyuma?
Prakash Raj: Ava eppa dhan nadakave aaramichirka, madam.
Where are we heading?

Joke

Caroline had a bad cold, so she took two handkerchiefs to the party, putting one in her blouse. Half thro the party, her handky was wet and she started looking for the second one in her blouse frantically. Suddenly she looked up and found everybody staring at her and, embarrassed, she blurted out "I am sure I had two when I came".

Present, Sir

I have been absent (from the blog) for a while and now I say 'Present Sir' as we used to say in school. I have gone thro the postings this month and enjoyed all of them, Akila's kolam, Riddle, Rules for Living and particularly the Double Vision which is amazing. Saradam also saw all these today which is rare.

Let me wish Meghna a happy birthday and many happy returns though I am late.

Today Jayaram and I performed the annual ceremony of Manni at Kovaipudur.

Yesterday, in Facebook I saw many many photoes taken by Rajan Raju. He is a great photographer.

Rules for living

The rules posted by Aishwarya make a lot of sense.  Perhaps they can be summed up in the advice given by sages that God is in every being, we should accept everything as the Lord's prasadam and be aware that whatever we do is thanks to His grace.

I heard that Gayathri sang very well at the math concert.  Wish we could have been there.

Rules for Living by Olivia Joules

Museum and dance season is at its peak in Chennai, isn't it? I'm missing all the inaugural and closing events that I might have had a chance to cover. Gayathri akka, do post a few pictures of Ramya's programme. Would love to see them.
Hope all's well with everyone.
Btw, this was an interesting read. Picked up from Facebook.

Rules for Living by Olivia Joules

1. Never panic. Stop, breathe, think.

2. No one is thinking about you. They’re thinking about themselves, just like you.

3. Never change haircut or color before an important event.

4. Nothing is either as bad or as good as it seems.

5. Do as you would be done by, e.g., thou shalt not kill.

6. It is better to buy one expensive thing that you really like than several cheap ones that you only quite like.

7. Hardly anything matters: if you get upset, ask yourself, “Does it really matter?”

8. The key to success lies in how you pick yourself up from failure.

9. Be honest and kind.

10. Only buy clothes that make you feel like doing a small dance.

11. Trust your instincts, not your overactive imagination.

12. When overwhelmed by disaster, check if it’s really a disaster by doing the following: (a) think, “Oh, sod it,” (b) look on the bright side, and, if that doesn’t work, look on the funny side. If neither of the above works then maybe it is a disaster so turn to items 1 and 4.

13. Don’t expect the world to be safe or life to be fair.

14. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow.

15. Don’t regret anything. Remember there wasn’t anything else that could have happened, given who you were and the state of the world at that moment. The only thing you can change is the present, so learn from the past.

16. If you start regretting something and thinking, “I should have done…” always add, “but then I might have been run over by a lorry or blown up by a Japanese-manned torpedo.”

MTR

Oh my, do I remember the MTR of the sixties - the ghee dripping, mouth watering dosa and chutney! Sad to read J chittappa's piece :(
There was an address by the Directors of L&T on New Year's eve & when he spoke of MTR, I knew only Mavalli! Seems he was referring to Mid-term review!

It has been hectic with Ramya's dance pgms last month. Thankfully it went off very well. She got an additional chance at Mylapore Fine Arts when some dancer cancelled in the last minute. She now has one show singing for another dancer on 12th, and her own dance at Velacheri on 13th.

My one hour singing pgm at Sakatapuram Mutt camp went well too. When I reached there, the place was fogged with thengai mattai to ward of mosquitos & I thought I am done for. Then I requested them to keep it away from the stage. I took my sruti a bit low - at 4 kattai - & ended up singing comfortably. I actually felt satisfed and enjoyed my own singing (for the first time??)

WISHING THE FAMILY A H-A-P-P-Y NEW YEAR AND PONGAL.

My Vision

I saw Einstein with my glasses on, haha. Very nice Perippa :)

Double vision!

MTR

Vimala and I were in Bangalore recently and took the opportunity to visit the famed Mavalli Tiffin Rooms. Had lunch and a bit of disappointment.  The food was sumptuous and good (and the price very reasonable) but the place lacked the old sparkle and cheer.  It was a bit dingy, in fact.  The MTR food packs are sold at another spot next door.  It seems the restaurant and the packaged food unit have split.

Greetings

Wish a very happy new yer to all of you.

Let us have a joke:

Seeing a lady standing helplessly near her car on the road, the policeman offered to help. The lady said I changed the wheel but cannot lower the jack. The officer started to lower the jack and the lady said, do it gently, my husband is sleeping in the back seat.
