A mere child

Quotation from TOI (Times of India) dated 29-12-2001.

I must take issue with the term "a mere child", for it has been my invariable experience that the company of a mere child is infinitely preferable to that of a mere adult.

Humour/User info on packages

Ramaa,

You have made up for your long silence with an excellent posting. Keep going.

User info on products

Thanks Ramaa.  Lets have more such ticklers.  We need to laugh to keep sane in a world growing more insane by the day!

LOL

Rama akka, too good. Thanks for sharing :)

user information on surface labels of retail packaging

The following is the lighter side of user instruction on packaging…
Source : the e-magazine : www.lokavani.com issue : October 2008 - I
Some examples of why the human race has probably evolved as far as possible. These are actual instruction labels on consumer goods:

On Sears hairdryer:
Do not use while sleeping.
(Gee, that's the only time I have to work on my hair!)

On a bag of Fritos:
You could be a winner! No purchase necessary. Details inside.
(The shoplifter special!)

On a bar of Dial soap:
Directions: Use like regular soap.
(and that would be how?)

On some Swann frozen dinners:
Serving suggestion: Defrost.
(But it's 'just' a suggestion!)

On Tesco's Tiramisu dessert: (printed on bottom of the box)
Do not turn upside down.
(Too late! you lose!)

On Marks & Spencer Bread Pudding:
Product will be hot after heating.
(Are you sure? Let's experiment.)

On packaging for a Rowenta iron:
Do not iron clothes on body.
(But wouldn't that save more time?)
(Whose body?)

On Boot's Children's cough medicine:
Do not drive car or operate machinery.
(We could do a lot to reduce the construction accidents if we just kept those 5 year olds off those fork lifts.)

On Nytol sleep aid:
Warning: may cause drowsiness.
(One would hope!)

On a Korean kitchen knife:
Warning: keep out of children.
(hmm...something must have gotten lost in the translation...)

On a string of Christmas lights:
For indoor or outdoor use only.
(As opposed to use in outer space.)

On a food processor:
Not to be used for the other use.
(Now I'm curious.)

On Sainsbury's peanuts:
Warning: contains nuts.
(but no peas?)

On an American Airlines packet of nuts:
Instructions: open packet, eat nuts.
(somebody got paid big bucks to write this one...)

On a Swedish chainsaw:
Do not attempt to stop chain with your hands.
(Raise your hand if you've tried this...)

On a child's Superman costume:
Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly.
(Oh go ahead! That's right, destroy a universal childhood belief.)

I am overwhelmed! I had no idea that the newspaper clipping had been posted here! THAAAAANKS for the wishes, everybody!
Simply had no time to come to the computer the past week. Today I have been home in the morning after a very long time, phew! Gotto run again in the evening.
Aishwarya, enjoyed your bit about the baby shower :):)

Ramakrishna Perippa,
Thanks. But no photos, perippa. Amrritha surprisingly slept through the event so I did not have a chance to move from my chair. It's totally ok, perippa. Even we remembered the anniversary only the day before :) His id is r.saminathan@gmail.com
Congrats Gaythri akka. Saw some pictures of you, Ramya at Ramnarayanan's event on FB. Some lec-dem, I presume.

Wishes et al

A very happy birthday to Sumanth and Sri Krishnan athimber.

Gayathri akka, hearty congratulations again on behalf of all of us, including appa and amma.

Perippa, I agree with you that we are all blessed to be born in such a good and attached family as ours. Touch wood!!

Anniversary

Yesterday 12th December was the second anniversary of my bypass surgery. After a couple of months of pain and discomfort, I have been able to go about as a normal 80 year old by God's will.. At that time we had a lot of doubt if the surgery was required or advisable at the age of 79. I must thank my relatives here in Coimbatore like Jayaraman, Chandru and Narayanan who persuaded me and also my Doctor Sundar Ramanathan for the excellent job he did. Gayathri was also able to come and was with me in the hospital all the ten days. During the two months following, Charu's attention to my needs and forcing me to eat etc is something I will not forget. I am blessed to have such relatives and I say once again what I have said before that relationships are the most important thing in life, to make us happier in good times and help us bear bad times.

-Ramakrishnan.

BIRTHDAYS

I have become lazy and opened the Blog only today after a few days. Let me wish Sumant, Jairam and Srikrishnan HAPPY BIRTHDAY and many happy returns.

Desi Baby Shower

The mail on Baby Shower was interesting and I could imagine the scene. Have you got any photoes ?

Aishwarya, let me also wish you a Wedding Anniveersary and many happy returns, though I am very late. What is Kaushik's email ID ?

Congrats!

Greetings

Aishwarya and Koushik celebrated their wedding anniversary on the 6th December.  The family greets them and wishes them many happy returns.

I must apologise for not including this in the monthly celebrities list.  My little diary was not properly updated last year, hence the slip.  I also failed to include Jairam (Ramaa's son-in-law) among the birthday babes.  Apologies again.

We had no Internet connection for more than a week from 1 December.  BSNL kept giving us a run-around, with the local exchange guy being impolite and indifferent.  Thanks to an unnamed samaritan, the connection was set right last evening.

Desi Baby shower

Haha, the image of the mamis in Pattu pudavais wearing coats, girls wearing pavadais and speaking with the accent sounds hilarious.
Really appreciate that people do have seemandhams even if in NY. Very few have them even in India these days. It has become optional. In my case, we did not have a seemandham as M was in Singapore then.

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

Desi baby shower

We happened to attend a seemandham of one of our neighbours at Pomona Ranganathar Kovil, NY. Fusing the desi and western practices, they had 'baby shower' balloons all over the tiny hall that had a nostalgic scent of pattu pudavis. But of course, the pudavai-sporting maamis were walking around with winter coats and boots. It seemed like a perfect place to observe NRIs trying hard to strike a balance.
And the ABCD (American Born Confused Desi) kids were conversing in heavily accented English to their moms who were feeding them thatchi mammu, catered by the temple management. The whole event was absolute fun. That day being our wedding anniversary, we also had a chance for Ranganathar darshanam.

A correction

Ramya Anuj's wedding anniversary is on 11th December (2005), not 12th December.

Jai Ho!!

To our blog.. Perippa, my sincere apologies for not being able to contribute for a while, other than a few quick posts. I, too, totally agree with KN athimber in that your wishes are for the whole PSC family.
Most of my posts are done during some free time at work. But of late, work has been quite hectic with me having to train a new joinee in UK. And during weekends, I just don't feel like switching on the laptop unless absoluetely necessary. I promise to continue my contributions.

Yesterday we saw the movie 7aam arivu. I thought the movie was good, though I think they tried to convey too much information within 3 hours. But the basic concept is definitely good and Surya has done a great job.

Some confusion

Jayaram,
When I opened the blog now I could only see the November postings and not the two postings I had done in December. Then I clicked Archives December and got the postings. Also the photoes are of NOVEMBER celebreties.

The Blog should continue

Power cuts in the morning and evening coupled with my own routine timings for walk, outing, lunch, serial, siesta etc together with Vivek's cornering the computer and also the breakdown of my UPS resulted in my not participating in the Blog for quite some time and I have missed it. I have talked to persons like Ramaa and Raji about the blog and they see it once in a while but do not post anything. I requested them to write something, anything at least once a month. Sowmya says she is too busy and rarely sees her mail. Varshaya was once active but is now silent. Ravi talks about the need to belong and keeping in touch with relatives (I hope he sees this)but I dont know if he sees the blog.

The BLOG SHOULD CONTINUE and I suppose, like in a bus, people will get in and get out at intervals.

To make it interesting, let me say a joke ( I read it recently and some of you also might have seen it).:

He has just starting learning golf and carries some balls in his trouser pocket to the course, in a bus. The lady in the next seat keeps staring at the bulge. He is not able to stand it and says "gold balls". After a little while, the lady asks "Is it as painful as tennis elbow".

-Ramakrishnan.

Greetings

Saradam and I wish Anu and Rajan a Happy Wedding Anniversary and many happy, healthy returns.

Also a Happy Birthday to Pavithra, I am late.

Hi all!
Visisted the blog after a month, I think! J Chittappa - definitely justified in your frustration - my first thought was to agree with your wanting to stop the wishes - then I felt KN Athimber's opinion was right too. It is really a nice thing to see the wishes - & I inform my side of the family to check out the blog esp when they have been wished- they do not visit the blog regularly.

TSS 60 function went off well by God's grace - it was really wonderful that almost everyone we had invited could make it.

Sowmya & I enjoyed a short stay in Bombay - but that was hectic too. A lot of alaichal & I do feel a bit drained now. Thinking back, its been one roller coaster right from Navaratri - with the Char Dham Yatra, Deepavali, preparations for the functions........
Now a new responsibility as Exec Trustee in the organisation SAFE is taking me deeper into the music season - I am still feeling a bit diffident about it - let's see how it goes this first time.
Ramya will be back here from Bombay after sending off Anuj on Dec 1. She has two dance recitals - on Jan 5 & 13. I am not singing for her this time, she has fixed a professional orchestra.

Oops, just saw the time - off to bed - g'night!
Gayathri

Happy birthday, Pavitra.  Many happy returns!

Happy bday Vimala Perimma

I totally agree with KN atimber. Your frustration is truly justified, perippa. But please carry this on. Absolutely excellent effort. As I told you earlier, my colleague is planning for a story on family blogs and since I did not have your number, I had asked her to get it from Akila. And apparently, she did call up Akila and had got yours. I'm not sure when she's planning to work on that.
Hope all's well with all the others.

I can understand Jayaraman's frustration. The most active bloggers, Akila, Gayathri and Ramu, are inactive for various reasons. So the posts are few. But, Jayaraman, continue your good work. When you post a greeting,it is on behalf of the PSC family!

Whither India?

Today's paper brings news of another day of 'tumult' in Parliament.  When will democracy truly function in India?

Uma Bharati says she will set fire to any Walmart store that may be opened in India.  Are political leaders and activists exempt from laws against inciting violence?

Thanks

Prashanth wants to thank us for our greetings on his birthday.  It seems he is not able to sign in, though he had earlier signed up.  I am sending him another invite.

Activity on the blog is becoming progressively less.  Perhaps there are a few who follow it but do not post anything.  I am thinking of stopping the birthday/anniversary greeting posts and leaving it to the individuals in the family to communicate directly if they wish.   For the present, I shall continue to provide the monthly celebrity lists and leave it at that.

Any comments will be welcome.

TSS 60th

Hi all!
I snatched a few minutes off to catch up with mails while the children (?!) and B'day boy are out.
I think the plans and preparations are going ok - they all have to come together on D-Day - with God's grace & elders' blessings.
We are looking forward to having everybody in the family with us on Sunday. And more so - we'll miss all those not here :(
We had darshan of Sakatapuram Periyava yesterday and got His blessings. We were concerned about the unrelenting rains for the past 2 weeks. The skies have cleared up today - & hope it lasts :)

My Internet connection was out of service for about six days and I must be way behind with some anniversaries and birthdays.  The telephone exchange called me a half hour back to ask if the Net was working now.  I shall have to some work to catch up.   Will try to do it later this evening.

Nice to see you back on the blog Aishwarya.  Koushik called a few days ago - Deepavali time.  How are you all?  How is Amrita?

Hope your part of the U.S. has not been affected by the snowstorm.

Hope all's well with all of you. Now that I'm a stay-at-home mom without any deadline pressures for news stories, I've decided to religiously follow this blog. Birthday calendar is a feel-good factor for the birthday souls. An amazing concept, Perippa.

Wishing a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND MANY HAPPY RETURNS TO MOHAN.

K.T.Ramani

Ramani (his friends know him as KTA or KT Ramani) has passed away suddenly and it has left a void particularly for us who are in Coimbatore. I have not seen him get angry and in 1959 I took his family car (a Austin A-40) from Madras to Tirupathi; due to a mistake of mine the car broke down half way up the hill; I stayed at Tirupathi for three days to get the car repaired and came to Madras and Ramani did not say a word to make me feel embarassed or hurt.

As Gayathri akka said, he did not suffer at all.

Please give my love & condolences to Pappa p'ma, Anand, Vidya & families

Bhaskar Ramamurthi, new IIT-M director

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

“The institute will find solutions to pressing problems of society”
Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi
Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi
Bhaskar Ramamurthi has been appointed as the new director of Indian Institute of Technology – Madras.
“The institute will continue to focus on fundamental and translational research given the development imperative of the country and find solutions to the pressing problems facing the society,” said Prof. Ramamurthi, a professor of electrical engineering.
President Pratibha Patil in her capacity as the Visitor of IIT Madras had approved the appointment of Prof. Ramamurthi which was conveyed to the IIT-M Board of Governors Chairman Prof. M.M. Sharma on Thursday. “The chairman informed me this morning. I will assume charge on Friday morning,” the new director said.
To him, the IIT-M, along with the oldest IITs, has to elevate itself to the next stage in fundamental and translational research as both were required.
It would continue to pursue fundamental research contributing to global knowledge pool and leverage innovation and technology to produce visible success stories that would impact the society in a positive way in sectors like education and agriculture.
“People are looking up to the IITs to improve the quality of their lives, especially in rural India,” Prof. Ramamurthi said optimistic of delivering products and solutions suited to the inclusive growth model of the country.
Research would also be a major thrust area. Most of the IITs have doubled the Ph.Ds in the past five years but still the output was modest compared to that of China and doctoral scholars were required for industry and teaching, he pointed out.
Dean of Planning at IIT-M till now, he graduated from IIT-M in 1980 with a B.Tech in Electronics Engineering and then went on to pursue his M.S and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
After obtaining his doctorate, he joined the AT&T Bell Laboratories in the United States where he worked on problems in indoor wireless communications and joined the faculty at the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT-in 1986.
His research area involves modulation and coding for mobile communications, wireless communication networks and design and implementation of wireless local loop systems.
He is a founding member of the Telecommunications and Computer Networking Group (TeNeT) that has come up with several products like Rural ATM, medical diagnostic kit and Indic computing to name a few.

Good joke, appa!
Akila, yes, the festivals are upon us with a bang!
I went to Kanakasri Nagar to meet Ravi - had a good time chatting with him, Srilakshmi and her mother.
Yesterday I officiated as Chief Guest at a Bharatanatyam Arangetram!! New experience - but I could do without the speech part of it!
I am leaving for Bombay tomorrow on an 'official' visit. I will be attending the L&T-CSI meeting on 11th as a Trustee of Prayas.
While the other two Prayas members are returning the same evening, I am taking advantage of Rajiv's being in Bombay. So this year, my Varalakshmi puja, Avani Avittam and Gayathri Japam are going to be celebrated there.
Back on 15th Monday.

Wishes

Again (!!) I've missed quite a few birthdays. Wishing everybody a very happy birthday. I was under the impression that I just "recently" posted in our blog. But when I scroll down, don't see my name anywhere in the last 15 days
Now that appa's missing in action, I will try to make up for his silence as well as much as I can. With the onset of aadi maasam, can't wait for all the festivals and the holidays - more so the holidays.
Somehow this season, the shops in panagal park are not as crowded as they were last year. Even the great Saravana stores seems to be only half full!! Is it the economy or are people bored of shopping or both??!!

JOKE

I do not remember if I posted this joke before.

Little Sally: Mummy, does God go to the bathroom ?
Mum: No dear, why do you ask
Sally : Well, this morning I heard Dad knock on the bathroom and say "Oh God, are you still there."

Ravi

Ravi and family are in India (Chennai) for a week . I told him I had sent a Birthday Greeting to Niranjan in the blog but he does not visit the blog. He does look into his mail box often and we can try inviting him to the blog once again. I told him that he should see the blog so that he can be in touch with the family and he agreed.

Birthday

A very happy BIRTHDAY to Anand and many happy returns. I do not think Anand uses the computer. It may be a good idea to invite Jyotsna to join the blog since she does work on the computer.

Looks like I will have to thank on behalf of Anuj for the Birthday greetings. I told him to see the blog - don't know if he did.

Am now busy collecting data about MLV for an encyclopedia - assignment given to me by Gowri and Ramnarayan.

Sakatapuram Periyava is camping at Sanskrit College during Chatur masyam. We are attending as much as possible. I got chance to sing during Sangeeta Seva on 3-4 occasions. Evening Ramayana discourse by Damal Ramakrishnan is going on. Next week it will be Sundar Kumar, and Damodara Dikshitar after him.

How thoughtful

Perippa, thank you so much for the update on Rajan. That was a very moving gesture by Rajan and Anu akka's friends. I have always been following his marathon's thanks to facebook. I am sure in no time he would recover and get back to his active life.
A very happy birthday to Aparna akka. Hope you have a great day.

Rajan Raju's progress

I reproduce below, for information, a mail just received from Chandru.

"My dear Jayaram
All well. Rajan continues to progress. He was made to sit  up on the bed with his legs dangling over the sides day before yesterday. While lying on bed  they remove the neck brace. For caution, the brace is put and he is turned etc., He was given a regular shower bath with shampoo for his hair etc., from day before yesterday. Physiotherapy and occupational therapy continues and he is slowly regaining movements. It is likely he may be shifted to the other rehabilitation hospital for specialised rehab tretment tomorrow. Let us hope and pray his progress will be faster after that.
There was a marathon run yesterday here and the distance to run was  100 kms.Almost  1000 people participatedin this.  I understand Rajan had earlier registered his name to participate for the 100 kms run, He participates in all such  activities here and also outside Singapore. He has done this earlier  occasions also. As he is in hospital now and cannot participate in the current event,  many of his and Anu's friends decided to run on his behalf. The organisers, when informed of Rajan being in hospital, were happy to let them do the run like a relay race. Here groups of 2 persons ran the distance in laps of 10 kms of the route, the last batch running the last lap of 10 kms. They had prepared special T shirts with the wordings 'TEAM RAJAN - Got to keep a good thing going"  Anu and Arjuna ran the first lap of 10 kms.. The team completed the run successfully. Very thoughtful and supportive - this gesture of Rajan and Anu's friends."

From Ramu

1. I missed to wish all those who celebrated their birthday & wedding day. Very best wishes to all and many happy returns of the day.
2. Thank you, Gayathri, for the brief on Vikram's reception. I also never knew that Nana used to sing well, especially Rafi's songs. During that first, small get-together at Sri Parvathi, after everything was over, Raji said that Nana sings well.
3. We keep praying for speedy recovery of Rajan.
4. H.H.Sakatapuram periaval is coming to Tambaram on 03 July, will be there for a week, then shift camp to Sanskrit College, where He will stay for sometime. We plan to perform Bikshavandanam and appeal to Him for Rajan's fast recovery.
