PSC/Sahasranama stotram/.

When Appa was transferred to Devakottai, Ramakrishnan and I were left in Madras so that our studies would not suffer. We went to Devakottai for a summar vacation. During those two months, Appa would call me every afternoon, around 300 p.m. I think, and we would together recite the Vishnu Sahasranama stotram, I of course reading from a book. Before the vacation was over, I had learnt the whole stotram by heart and could recite it without referring to the book.

PSC MEMORIES

After evening walk, appa would sit in the dining hall of K,Nagar at 06.15 PM and start his sandyavandhanam. Within 10 minutes, all of us would assemble for the evening slokham and bhajan session. Appa will circulate handwritten copies of a new slokham, ( he himself used to write several copies of the slokham ) and teach us. Then old slokhams , followed by bhajans.
( I try to do it now with only Vaishnavi but fail often ). Rukku, Lux, Lalitha, me, Rama, Ashok, Shobha, Venkat, Chander all used to be there.

PRAYERS TO JANGA MANII

Our namaskarams to Janga manni on her birth anniversary.
She was a wonderful mother and so many things are to be learnt from her .
When ever we happen to meet some old Mylapore people, or some old family friends, or some old school teachers, or even some distant relatives, we feel so happy to hear them talking about appa and amma with full of praise.
When appa`s birth day was posted in the blog, it went in my mind about amma`s..
But did not try to find out and we feel guilty.

Janga Manni's janmanakshatram

This is the month of Adi and today's star is Tiruvadirai. That is, today is Janga Manni's janmanakshatram. Let us all remember her role in our lives and thank God for having given us a wonderful mother.

The following is what I posted in our blog on this occasion last year.

"How many of us ever bothered to find out what mother (Janga Manni)'s birthday was? Recently I asked Ramakrishnan if he knew the date and he rang up today to say it was 12 August 1909 (Month of Adi, Tiruvadirai star). Though we missed out on the date, the month (August) is still current. Let us remember Manni with gratitude for her unfailing love, simplicity and good nature.NAMASKARAMS."

PSC MEMORIES

Ramakrishnan`s memories ( written on July 13 ) was I think when appa was a District Judge. At the time of appa`s sashtiabdhapoorthi at Suprabha, I was only 9 years and I have seen appa only as a retired person. He was going to court as a Lawyer for some years and then retired from that too.
I have never seen him sitting idle . There was no TV at that time. He used to see the obituary column in The Hindu first after morning coffee, before taking bath. ( many of us do this even now ). After bath he used to do an elaborate puja, in his own room, for which he used to do all preperations himself. Then he will take his own insulin injection, after boiling the needle, again in his own room. He will read Ramayanam or Mahabharatham for about an hour and then complete the days work of Company Law Institute, which sometimes will extend till 4 PM.In between, he will take a breake and write Sri Ramajayam.
His afternoon nap was exactly from 1 PM to 2 PM. After the nap, he used to takeup letter writing to people , for an hour. Then gardening for sometime, before going for a short walk.
( Shall continue. Power cut time now)

MEMORIAL DAY

It is very nice to read Jayaramanna,s and Ramakrishnan,s writings. I am also moved.
Not a day passes for me without remembering appa ( and amma ). Even though Sarada,s association with appa was only 7 years, she also used to remember him very frequently and used to recall what appa told her on different occasions. In the later days, when only me and family were with appa and amma, appa changed his dinner time to 7.30 PM ( from 8 PM which was his dinner time for many many years ) and insisted that Sarada should go to bed by 9 PM , because I was going for work in shifts.
I wonder whether there is anyone matching him!!

MEMORIAL DAY

I am moved by reading what Jayaramhas written. To add to what he has said, I just want to say what I often think and say. Nowadays we are all 'tense' always and tension is the most often used word even in TV serials. But, Appa was never tense (or bored). He accomplished so much every day starting with the Ramayanam reading in the morning, then dictating judgements to the stenographer who comes home, bath, lunch and off to court. I have seen him in court a few times and he was majestic there with his tall figure and gown and before taking his seat he would display folded hands - was it a greeting to the advocates or a silent prayer to God tha his judgments should be correct ? In the evening, he would play tennis in the Officers' Club and then off to the other club for some Billiards. Back home and Sandhyavandhanam and reading the case papers till dinner. After Dinner we wuld all sit around briefly for some convesaton. With all this, I am amazed at the number of Homoeo books he readand made copious notes on the medicines. We used to go for a picnic once a month or two months even if we went to the same place again and again. He used to make me Jyaram sing, particularly 'Maye' in Tharangini Ragam and'AiyeMetha Kadinam'from the film Nandanar.

Though e had a large family, he invited two cousins of ours (Kittu and Panju) to stay with us and study in school. He had a large heart. Wherever he went he was treated with much respect.

Anda Naalum Vandhidadho !

-Ramakrishnan.

Memorial Day

Today, 13 July, is PSC's birthday. He was born on this date in 1896. I recall with pleasure and gratitude the times spent with him, the great contribution he made to moulding all our lives, the values he gave us and the affection he had for us all, never demonstrative but always there. If the family is now as close-knit as it is, it is due to the manner in which father steered us. Namaskarams, Appa.

ARANGETRAM

Saradam and I are very happy that the function went off well in spite of minor hitches. When you had told me that Ramya's feet were full of blisters due to the strenuous practice sessions, we were much worried.
-Ramakrishnan.

Wishing Aditya a very very happy birthday.

Arangetram

Thank you one & all, for your wishes. The Arangetram yesterday went off well, in that Ramya's dance was good, my voice 'behaved' decently in the 3 items that I sang. There were a few backstage hitches, like- we realised we had not got one piece of Ramya's dance costume & Anuj had to drive all the way back home & fetch it; The special audio system that Ramya had arranged- the main man didn't turn up but sent his assistants instead, & so the final effect was not as good as we wanted. But I think the selected items, the dance & overall standard was good which carried the day.
Sowmya's being here was a great moral & physical support- I don't know what I would have done without her.
We are yet to get the photos & dvd. Will post as soon as we get them.
We are off to Chicago & onward to Durham tomorrow. Clearing up all the stuff at home, returning the many vessels etc that we had borrowed - it is really like the aftermath of a huge wedding! As we had only today for TSS to see Madison, we went around the University Campus, walked down the Monona- Mendota lakes.
Looks like we will be able to relax only after reaching Durham!

KARMA YOGA

The explanation given by Akila in her posting of 27th May appeals to me. The Sanyasi, despite attaining a high level of Sidhis by Yoga etc, was perhaps still full of pride, anger and love for himself.
Regarding Shruti's questions, there is no point in giving her Hindu philosophy at this stage and it may even frighten her. May be we can say that people are born with different Swabhavas, attitudes and tastes due to their genes and after that some are lazy and some hardworking etc. As a result, the group of hardworking persons are able to earn more and give better education for the children etc and over many generations the gap becomes big. Having said this, I am myself not satisfied with this.
Gayathri's comments are not very helpful. I think it puts the cart before the horse. I want a doubt cleared in order to progress towards faith and she says If I have full faith the doubts will vanish. So where do we start ?
Ramakrishnan.

Wishes, & Karma!

Wow, so much has been happening while I have been away! In a nutshell - our Europe holiday was wonderful (by God's grace). I have uploaded the pics and am in the process of captioning them.
I am now with Ramya in Madison. We are well into the practise sessions- first I have to get into the groove of singing, my voice should open up. There is a lot I have to learn for the pgm.
It is still quite chilly here. I have really begun to feel how Surya Bhagavan is the life giver - without Him, I feel so lazy! This weather is really suited for a holiday resort only!
As usual, my wishes for those who celebrated their b'days / WA's this month.

Coming to Karma Yoga discussion - I guess we all go thru these questions. I honestly feel that once total faith comes and sits inside you, all the questions just vanish. For me, the turning point was Paramacharya's words in the book The Hindu Dharma.

KARMA YOGA

After I read Jayaramanna`s comments, I was just sitting in front of the computer, thinking. Koushik asked me why I was sitting like that and I told him whether I will be able to suggest some books for PCJ. Then he said that Sri Baba himself has written many subjects like this and they can be accessed in the following :

http://www.vahini.org/contents.html

The Vahinis

Prasnotthara Vahini

Sandeha Nivarini
Chinna Katha I
Chinna Katha II
From that site, Koushik has suggested the above top two headings where some answers may be there. The bottom two titles are stories for children. I have not read the above yet.
The doubts asked by Shruthi, I am sure, will be in the minds of many many elders also!
I am stopping now for today, with doubts still on the subject!

Karma Yoga

I read a small story in one of Baba's books. Baba was staying in a bungalow during one of His visits to Mumbai. Right behind the bungalow, there was a dump yard and a group of people were looking for left over food. One of the devotees was watching this very sadly and asked Baba why there was so much difference in the society. Baba replied that this group of people were extremely rich in their previous birth. They had plenty of food on their dining table and wasted a lot of food. So, now in this birth they are picking up the food they threw.
Baba's advice for us is, do not waste food. If you have left over food, feed it to a cow or a dog.

Karma yoga

I share the questions and doubts raised by Ramakrishnan and Ramu. The karma theory is very difficult to understand. If you do not know what sins you committed in your previous birth, it is not easy to accept the 'rewards' given to you in this birth. Even the fear of punishment under the law in one's own lifetime does not prevent the commission of crimes. Perhaps abject surrender to the Supreme Being and total faith can bring enlightment .

Granddaughter Shruti often asks me who created God. She also asks why there should be such disparities in society, why some people should lack the essentials for life while others have a surfeit of wealth. Can anyone suggest a simple source where I can read about answers to such questions?

.

KARMA YOGA

Dear Ramakrishnan,
When I started reading that story, the same doubt that " how a Sanyasi have His next birth as a pig? " came to my mind also, even before I read your second para.
There is another doubt in my mind for a long time now. It is said that right when the mother concieves, the destiny of the child-to-be born is decided. Then is it not that everything in the child`s life is decided at that time! Then is it not that what life we all had and will be having, are all decided!

Ramu

KarmaYoga

Perippa, this is what I feel could be an explanation. We are born as a human in this birth due to our Karma in our previous birth. How we utilize this birth would be a deciding factor for our next birth.
If we take the example of the story you cited, the sanyasi was obviously still attached to his body. He was definitely not a completely liberated soul. Probably the fact that he would be born as a pig in his next birth, was a test that was put to him. If he had not reacted so adversely to this news, then even that could have been nullified.

KARMAYOGA

Hi all,
The Religion Column in the Hindu a few days back carried a discourse by somebody as usual and the speaker talks of the law of Karma and gives a story to show how the Jeevan takes a love for the Body which it occupies temporarily for one birth. The story is: There is a sanyasi who has already reached a high level of 'realisation' and he sees that his end is near and he is going to be born as a pig in the next birth at such a time in such a place. He hates the idea of occupying a pig's body and tells his sishyas to seek that pig and kill it. Then he dies and is born as a pig. When the sishyas come to kill it, the Sanyasi' jeevan has already starting loving the pig's body and runs and escapes.

The story has brought up a question I have had for many years. How can a soul which has already reached a high level be born as a pig in the next birth. If so, what is the use of all our good deeds in this birth. If I am already born as a man in the evolution of the jeevan by my good deeds and I live a good life now, should it not ensure that in the next birth I will be only be born as a better man, one step forward to reach Moksha ?
Any comments ?
-Ramakrishnan.

Jayaram,

Saradam and I wishyou a very happy wedding anniversary at Dhaka and many happy returns.
It must be nice to be with the children (I mean Ramesh and Ujwala) for the occasion. Hope Vimala's pains are under control.
I am having a very upset tummy last nine days and today is the last day of antibiotics etc. Hope the pain will go tonight. I think the problem started with the Chukku Coffee I took on the last day of a yoga class week followed later by a Rishi's dinner made of entirely uncooked items like beetroot, cabbage, Aval and fruits. God knows what infection was there. The items had been brought by all the participants, each one item. I had taken sweet Aval.
I contacted one of the participants yesterday but nobody else seems to have had this tummy problem. But they all were much younger.
Bye. - Ramakeishnan.

Hi

Hi all!
I have been checking this site regularly, but did not post any mail for quite a long time. April was hectic with rehearsals. The pgms went off hmmmmmmmmmmmm--ok, could have been better!
So here's our Wishes for the anniversary & Birthday Celebrators:
Rukku athai-Athimber, Mythili athai-Mama, Srikanth-Vidya;
Ramesh, Ketan, Papa athai, Divya, & Cheenu athimber in advance!
I got back from visakhapatnam this morning. After last Monday's pgm my voice had turned hoarse, & I did not recover well enough for this pgm. Still, we managed because I was not singing alone. All the local people praised us for our flawless Telugu diction (so they said!)we also got the blessings of Nedunuri who said we should keep singing every chance we get- that means he approves of our understanding of his music!
No photos this time - we lost our camera after the Monday pgm, boohoo. S is not able to remember if he gave it to someone, or whether it just slipped from his hand & fell somewhere.
Thanks everyone for your wishes!

Photos/Wedding anniversary

Today Srikkanth and Vidya celebrate their wedding anniversary. Best wishes to them. No photos with me in digital form.
Re. Ramakrishnan's post. It would be nice if we could build up a good album of photos of the entire family, with quality pictures. I shall start one with a few photos and make a web album open to all members, so that they can add to the collection, for anyone to use at any time.
Any ideas from any one?

Vichu's Photo

Jayaram,
I suppose I must have the photo (of Vichu) in a digital camera to ba able to post it. Am I right. I do not have such a one now. I shall ask Sowmya/Varshaya to send it to you. I wonder if Varshaya will see this but I will send her a separate mail.
Right now I am listening to a beautiful Shanmugapriya by Nedanuri Krishnamurthy.

Wedding anniversary

Best wishes to Sowmya and Vichu on their wedding anniversary today. Many happy returns!

(Ramakrishna, if you have a good photo of Vichu and Sowmya, can you please post it?)

New and illeterate?

To answer Ramakrishnan's query. To add a comment on any post, you simply click on 'comment' below the post and proceed from there. But comments made on old posts (and even new ones) could be overlooked, as they open only when clicked on. So the best thing is to make a new post, referring to the item comments on and giving its heading and date for easy tracking. Please see the earlier posts on this topic under the label 'comments vis-a-vis posts',

Jayaraman

I am rather new and illiterate

I have just got the ingternet connection and hope to look into the blog site more regularly now. Will somebody tell me how to add comments to some earlier item.

Thought for the day

True devotion consists in offering all your thoughts and actions to God and yearning for His grace. Devotion confined to a brief spell in the Pooja room (shrine room) or temple is not true devotion. During that time, devotion seems to swell within you and you feel at peace but, once outside, the peace is lost and anger takes its place. This cannot be called devotion. Bhakti (Devotion) has been described as a state of non-separation from God. Regardless of time, space or circumstance, one should feel closeness to God – that is Bhakti. True devotion transcends the limitations imposed by one’s daily routines and the obligations of life.

Birthdays

It is Ketan's birthday today. Ramesh (Vidya) celebrated his birthday on 13 April. Best wishes to them both. I have had to keep away from the computer for nearly the whole of two days, as a new AC was being fitted yesterday and today the flat was swarming with painters who were painting the grillwork. All the best to the birthday celebrants!

Fact for the day

This may be difficult to believe, but Coca Cola was four annas (25 p.) a bottle when I first went to Delhi in 1957. Pepsi Cola was five annas. Today, I bought one podalanga (snake gourd) for a little over 32 rupees.

Fact for the day

This day - 10 April - in 2001, the Netherlands approved a bill legalising euthanasia. Also this day in 1938, the Austrians, in a sham plebiscite, approved the Anschluss (the unification of Austria with Germany).

Fact for the day

Hi, I thought something like a "Fact" for the day could help the blog. So here is the first one. Am sure many of us might have read/heard of these.

Coca-Cola was originally green.
