Vimala and I (and KN and Rukku) have had a great vacation here in Kovaipudur for a week and are scheduled to leave for Chennai tonight. FROM RAMU

1. I checked with the Vaadhyaar on 18th Jan, about the Tamil New year day and he confirmed that it is Chithirai 01, as for as we are concerned.
Kapaleeswarar Temple have printed the new Panchamgam with Thai as new year because it comes under the Govt.

FROM RAMU

1. The pictures of 11 Jan posted by PCJ are good. Particularly, the picture of Prasanth, a little close up from the side, is excellent.
2. Sarada and I went to Raju anna`s house for Janga manni`s ceremony on 18th Jan. Vaadhyaar assistants were there by 8.30 and the chief ( Ramudu vaadhyaar`s son ) was there at 9.30. NG,Lux and Rukku were there. By 12 noon, we had lunch.
3. Wednesday 21st is the upanayanam of two grandsons of Mrs.Chandra Gopalan ( NG`s sister) for which I have got an invitation. I am thinking of attending it at Adyar and then going to KN`s house to see PGS and Lalli who are expected from Delhi by noon.

Welcome Aishwarya

Here is the link to the pictures taken on 11 January. A bit of an odd collection but ....

TAMIL NEW YEAR

1. When it was announced by Kalaignar sometime back that Pongal day will be the new year day, it disturbed me very much, like Ramki says, but I took it as so many other things Kalaignar says and ignored it.
2. Now I wonder whether new panchangams are ready in the shops!
3. I am absolutely sure that this will be reverted back if JJ comes to power!

Pongal and New Year

I cannot believe that anybody wanted that Pongal day should be the Tamil New Year to say that now, a longstanding desire of many people has been realised. The Govt said that many scholars were consulted before making the change and now the High Court also has said that an elected Govt can make such changes. I do not believe either. The Govt could have started a new era (sakaaptham) like Salivahana Sakaptham and named it after Kalaignar instead of interfering with a traditioanal practice. When a New Year starts we must hae a number or name to identify it. In the Christian calendar, we have the numbers and this is followed world wide and in Hindu calendar we have the names. I suppose it will not be long before a new calendar is started as Kalignar Aandu No.1. What will happen to this when a new Govt is formed ? This is nothing but arragance that whatever the TN Govt says will not be questioned by the Centre or anybody and the judiciary is under the Govt's influence, whatever the method. I am sure that even in the other Southern States (Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada) which are also called Dravidian, the New Year starts with the Sun in Mesham though, the Telugu calendar is based on the Moon's position.and their New Year Yugadi comes about 15 days before the Tamil New Year on Chithirai 1st.

Our Pongal

Seeking everybody's blessings on this pongal and , as perippa says, new year. For people who care for some e-pongal, here it is.

My mother-in-law is here to celebrate pongal with us. So, we are having a good time with her.
Talking about the new tamil new year, wonder when the new Panchangam would be released!!! Would that also change to "Thai maasam"!!! Somebody at work told me that pongal used to be celebrated as new year in olden days. Is that really so?

Pongal

Our heartiest good wishes to Aishwarya (and all others of the family) on the occasion of Pongal. We enjoyed the Sunday lunch (co-hosted by KN/Rukku and ourselves) when some of you were with us. Wish you all could have stayed a bit longer, as Ramu says.
I took a few pictures and shall post them very soon. I have to cull out the not-so-good ones and edit a few and I am feeling too lazy righ now!
Pongal also marks the dawn of a new year, as declared by our government. Some TV channels show people speaking about their long-cherished desire having been realised! Funny I never knew about it. When will the government announce the name for the era and the names of various years?

PONGAL WISHES

1. Best wishes to all on the occasion of Pongal.
2. This is the HEAD PONGAL for Koushik Aishwarya. Her aunt and husband came home with a small " seeru" and there was a full "karumbu" also. Like Kunjappa, I cut a portion of the karumbu into small pieces and Koushik enjoyed well.

FROM RAMU

1. We had a very nice time on Sunday 11th with PCJs, PCRKs, KNs,TSSs , Shankars and Prasada. Lunch was very good and I had to be careful not to overeat.
After returning home at 1.30PM, we realised that we could have spent some more time with all.
I think Sarada and I should plan another visit - go to Besant Nagar for lunch, stay till evening tea and come back.
2. Ramya`s dance photos are very good.
