Akila, yes, the festivals are upon us with a bang!
I went to Kanakasri Nagar to meet Ravi - had a good time chatting with him, Srilakshmi and her mother.
Yesterday I officiated as Chief Guest at a Bharatanatyam Arangetram!! New experience - but I could do without the speech part of it!
I am leaving for Bombay tomorrow on an 'official' visit. I will be attending the L&T-CSI meeting on 11th as a Trustee of Prayas.
While the other two Prayas members are returning the same evening, I am taking advantage of Rajiv's being in Bombay. So this year, my Varalakshmi puja, Avani Avittam and Gayathri Japam are going to be celebrated there.
Back on 15th Monday.

Again (!!) I've missed quite a few birthdays. Wishing everybody a very happy birthday. I was under the impression that I just "recently" posted in our blog. But when I scroll down, don't see my name anywhere in the last 15 days
Now that appa's missing in action, I will try to make up for his silence as well as much as I can. With the onset of aadi maasam, can't wait for all the festivals and the holidays - more so the holidays.
Somehow this season, the shops in panagal park are not as crowded as they were last year. Even the great Saravana stores seems to be only half full!! Is it the economy or are people bored of shopping or both??!!

Ravi and family are in India (Chennai) for a week . I told him I had sent a Birthday Greeting to Niranjan in the blog but he does not visit the blog. Sakatapuram Periyava is camping at Sanskrit College during Chatur masyam. We are attending as much as possible. I got chance to sing during Sangeeta Seva on 3-4 occasions. Evening Ramayana discourse by Damal Ramakrishnan is going on. Next week it will be Sundar Kumar, and Damodara Dikshitar after him.

Rajan Raju's progress

I reproduce below, for information, a mail just received from Chandru.

"My dear Jayaram All well. Rajan continues to progress. He was made to sit  up on the bed with his legs dangling over the sides day before yesterday. While lying on bed  they remove the neck brace. For caution, the brace is put and he is turned etc., He was given a regular shower bath with shampoo for his hair etc., from day before yesterday. Physiotherapy and occupational therapy continues and he is slowly regaining movements. It is likely he may be shifted to the other rehabilitation hospital for specialised rehab tretment tomorrow. Let us hope and pray his progress will be faster after that.  There was a marathon run yesterday here and the distance to run was  100 kms.Almost  1000 people participatedin this.  I understand Rajan had earlier registered his name to participate for the 100 kms run, He participates in all such  activities here and also outside Singapore. He has done this earlier  occasions also. As he is in hospital now and cannot participate in the current event,  many of his and Anu's friends decided to run on his behalf. The organisers, when informed of Rajan being in hospital, were happy to let them do the run like a relay race. Here groups of 2 persons ran the distance in laps of 10 kms of the route, the last batch running the last lap of 10 kms. They had prepared special T shirts with the wordings 'TEAM RAJAN - Got to keep a good thing going"  Anu and Arjuna ran the first lap of 10 kms.. The team completed the run successfully. Very thoughtful and supportive - this gesture of Rajan and Anu's friends."

Prayed for Rajan this morning. Appa called to tell me his surgery was at 9.30am IST. Hope it is over and that he is recovering. Continuing our prayers.

If Ramu chittappa's laptop was alive, and if he had attended, he would have written about Sridhar's son Vikram Govind's Upanayanam Reception. I suddenly realised I could share that too! :)

It was a very nice evening get-together at the Hyatt. Another chance to meet up with family. Vikram looks a LOT like Sridhar, with a sweet dimple on his cheek like his athai/peripa. At 13, he is almost as tall as Sridhar! We were told he plays the guitar, veena and trumpet - we had a sample of the last one. Karaoke and mike set were arranged and Sekhar (Viji's son), Vijay (Mahi's son), RamNarayan, Raji (Rama's daughter) and others sang. As usual I quickly finished off an abhang (got lost having taken a high pitch).
Padma (Sridhar) looks not a day older than on her wedding day! She said she's staying for 2 months this time, wants to catch up everyone & promised to visit. Looking forward to that!
Prathima in Europe & Shobha in the US did not attend. Lakshmi's (Rama's daughter) husband Jayaram did the compering and added fun to the event. The BIGGEST surprise was Naana athimber singing. He doled out Mohd Rafi songs like a pro - too good!

Rajan Raju

Rajan's surgery has been postponed as he has slight temperature.  The surgery will be rescheduled when the fever subsides.  Meanwhile, Chandru says that Rajan is maintaining progress.

     Chandru tells us that Rajan is making progress and is cheerful.  A surgery to stabilise the neck is scheduled for tomorrow Wednesday. This, we learn, will facilitate more aggressive physiotherapy which will speed up the recovery.  Let us all say a special prayer for the success of the surgery.

Pankajam Mami

Though I was a baby at the time in Vellore, I remember Pankajam mami well, for she used to like me a lot. They were such nice people. Once she gave me a miniature veena as a gift. I dont remember what I did with it!

Years later, Mama and mami called on me and KN in Karpagam Gardens. After mami's passing, we visited Mama in Vellore.

KN saw this item in the Chennai paper (he sees the e-paper in Coimbatore) and forwarded it to Jayaraman.

Prasad has got an appointment order as an Executive Office Assistant in an auditing company in Race Course Road, Coimbatore. He has to join on the 15th June. All of you please bless him for a long career in this job.
Vivek is back from a busy and enjoyable holiday with many of his cousins in Trivandrum and his school reopens today. The monsoon seems to have started and it is raining since last night and he has to go by bus and walk some distance. His school van will operate only from 15th when other schools reopen.
Rajiv made a trip to Italy for a week with his music group where they performed.

Saradam and I wish a happy wedding anniversary and many happy returns to Sekhar/Rajani, Anand/Neeraja and Ramesh/Ujwala. Saradam and I had attended the first two weddings. For Ramesh/Ujwala's wedding we were booked to go but heavy rains and the disruption of train services at Vizag forced many of us to cancel the trip.

I am praying for Rajan's quick recovery to complete health every morning during my prayers. It is really God's grace that it was not more serious. I think that Ramu should, as he did on a previous occasion, organise a Koottu Prarthanai when all of us will pray for him at the same time, say for three minutes.

Rajan  is in hospital in Singapore recovering after a serious road accident in Paris.  His parents as also Chandru and Mythili are now in Ssingapore.  Let us all pray for his speedy and complete recovery.

Wow, Perippa's. I read this article yesterday in The hindu and was awed at her achievements so long ago. And now to know that you all knew her, amazing really!!

Vellore Days

Referring to Jayaram's posting about Pankajam Mami and her husband P.M.Venkatachari.
Jayaraman and I cannot forget them. In Vellore, for three years they were family friends and they could chat and play with us like young children. They had no children and they always accompanied us (in their Austin Car) in our picnics to Palar river bed which was about 10 km from our houses. Some times Raju used to drive their car to the river. Jayaram and I first started playing Table Tennis on their small cot. Later, after they became older, they lived in Sriramnagar in Madras and I have visited them at least once. I am sure Mythili and Papa will remember them.

Mami's picture revives old memories. They were happy days indeed.

Mami and Mama of Vellore

The following appeared in The Hindu Metroplus Chennai edition today.  Ramakrishnan will recognise Mami who was our neighbour for a short while when we moved to Vellore - in 1942 or '43.  She and her husband were 'Mami' and "Mama" to us all.  Extremely friendly, nice people.  (I did not know till now that Mami was the sister of S Ranganathan, who was the Secretary in the Ministry of Commece and Industry when I joined it in 1957).

The key board of the laptop was giving trouble for sometime. The Sony service centre, which was in Ashok Nagar ( about 3 kms for me ), has been shifted to Chetpet now. So, I had to carry the laptop there. It has been rectified now.

( I hope I have not missed anyone).

It was an excellent evening. Everyone enjoyed it and expressed the wish to have such occassions once in a while.

Many did not know that Ram Narain, Balu, Sekar ( Viji's son ), Ragupathy's daughter, Vijai, sing well. We could hear them on that day.

The snacks were made there itself and was very good.

1. I am back in the blog, thanks to Rajiv & Jayaramanna for suggesting Mozilla Firefox & Google Chrome. Akila downloaded both and I am able to access blog.

Wedding Anniversary

Saradam and I wish a very happy wedding anniversary to Raju/Padma (11th) and Jayashankar/Priya (14th). Padma Manni is down with a fracture in her ankle and we pray to God that she should get well very quickly.

yes the one on the left - standing is Mowli periappa. The one in girl's dress is Raja mama. Apart from appa and Ramani mama the seated boy is either Kanga periappa or Cheema chithappa.

Filling the void for appa.. The laptop at home had to be formatted last week and I was unable to check what the issue was for appa to login to our blog. Would definitely try to do by tomorrow so that he can be in touch as well.
